During Valenciennes airshow held at French National Day, our “Red Devils” were present alongside all the French Air Force ambassadors. Our team had the opportunity to spend the afternoon with the “Reds” before, during and after the display. An occasion to make a full page about the display from A to Z. For the occasion, the leader “Pappy” had a passenger…A little bear named "Rafalou" in possession of an already heavy log book. The “Red Devils” guest has already flown on Rafale and much other kind of aircraft. In fact the bear will be for sale later on to get funds for a French charity organization pushed by the Rafale display team. This can be compared as the Belgian “I fly for charity”.
The display was planned around 16:30. Everybody was preparing and get to the red planes waiting for action. Technical crew and pilot did the preparation in front of the public. Pilot installed with the help of the dedicated technician and awaiting the startup clearance. Clearance from the tower and the four Lycoming engines were started all at the same moment.
The needed waiting time to get the engine at the correct oil temperature of 140°…but at  once the four engines were stopped…the tower was requesting to stop because a heavy rain shower was foreseen in the coming minutes…and effectively it was an heavy one!. The “Red Devils” show was simply postponed until better conditions. Twenty minutes later clearance was given and under the order of the leader the four engines started again. The bad weather was over and the “Devils” could perform their good weather display. As usual a dynamic display, being more perfect at every presentation. During the display applaud was received from the public, mostly after the crossing passes or the different “burst” figures. Show is over and back to the parking in front of the public…Warm applauds to the “Reds” as conclusion of a well appreciated display.
Show was over but not all the task…For the technical crew verification of the planes and tarpaulin’s for the night, for the pilot hot debriefing and form signature. It was now time to unpack all together…
As the SBAP team had the opportunity to follow our national “Reds”, we propose a complete photographic overview of the show. Hopefully you will appreciate to discover the other side of a display…
We would like to thanks all the team, pilots and technicians for their kindness and availability during this report. (And also to have protected our photo material in their van during the generous and very wet rain shower…).
