Airpower
History: AirPower is the name of an airshow hosted by the Austrian
Federal Armed Forces, Red Bull and Styria, which takes place every 2
years at the Hinterstoisser Airbase in the Zeltweg area. The first
event took place on 20 and 21 June 1997 under the name
"International Flugtag".
But since 2000, the airshow has been renamed in AirPower and it was
decided to organize it every two years. The AirPower is indubitably
one of the largest airshows in continental Europe.
Sadly, in 2007 the air show was cancelled due to the reorganisation
of the airbase and the introduction of the new Eurofighter Typhoon
aircraft. The office of the Ministry of Defence also cancelled the
2014 edition and moved the event on for 2015 due to a budget
situation.
Airpower
2019: AirPower is a highly recommended airshow for both military and
civilian passionate and photographers offering an extensive outfit
of participants. This event may be called "atypical"
because of the triple organization between the official Austrian Air
Force, the unavoidable Red Bull Company and the province of
Steinermark. This kind of organization creates the opportunity to
present a large mix between military power and civilian preserved
aircraft.
This year, the static show was impressive with various NATO
countries like The Netherlands, Germany, Italy and much more. The
highlights of the static program were certainly the Italian F-35A
and the Red Bull demo team with a range of incredible flying
machines. Despite a bad weather as seen in the photographic report,
the flying program was rich and included various demo teams like the
Breitling Jet Team for one of their last appearances, the Patrouille
Suisse, the colourful Frecce Tricolori, the Belgian F-16AM solo
display, the Swiss Air Force F-18 Hornet and of course the Austrian
Red Bull Team. But for me the highlight of the show was an aerial
combat between a Swedisch FVM 1Ö Tummelisa and a German Fokker DR1.
Both aircraft are tailwheel equipped and the Swedisch pilot probably
saw the sign of the taxiway too late and tipped over it. Even if the
accident seemed serious enough, there was only structural damage,
luckily more fear than harm.
The other highlights of the airshow were the demonstrations of
different Austrian Military aircraft like the Eurofighter Typhoon,
too rare in our countries, the good old Saab 105OE and the various
helicopters wearing the Austrian roundels. To conclude, this one day
trip (yes yes) was made possible thanks to Lucien Wagner who
organized this mission to Zeltweg and the AirPower 2019 by bus !
Keep a little spot in your agenda for the 2021 edition; definitely
worth the travel. |
