On Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 July 2019, The Fighter Collection in association with IWM Duxford organized Flying Legends 2019. Now in its 27th year, the main theme focused on the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the "Longest Day" and Operation Overlord. Celebrating this day with respect for all the men and women in general and, in particular, for those who risked and gave their lives for our freedom. 6 June 1944 was the start of the largest combined naval, air and land operation in history. And the theme was very present throughout the weekend.
As flying generally starts at 2.00 PM, the mornings are used, for those who want to, to have a flight line walk and get up close to all the aircraft on static display, have a talk with some of the crews of the exhibited aircraft and see re-enactors give life to the settings. You could bump into Laurel and Hardy or even a long-legged Charlie Chaplin. And you had to behave, because the famous Keystone Cops were on the scene to keep everything under control.
Besides these activities, you could also wander around the sale booths, searching for that little missing item, eager to read book, a nice to have model and pay a visit to the various exhibitions and museums on site at Duxford. Such as Historic Duxford, Air and Sea, Battle of Britain, 1940 Operations Room, Conservation in Action, and much more...

Another eye catcher was the presence of the "Silver Spitfire" - G-IRTY, before departing for the longest flight, a journey around the world. You can follow the Silver Spitfire adventure on : https://www.silverspitfire.com.
The Silver Spitfire is currently in Japan, at Hanamaki for some maintenance matters and has travelled 12.238 NM so far.

The flying program was pretty much the same on both days, but started a little earlier on Saturday, with the Royal Air Force Red Arrows. Sadly the weather was not to favourable, so the 'flat' show had to be flown. But as usual, an impeccable performance. For now, the Red Arrows have left the UK and the team is on its North American Tour. Having departed RAF Scampton on August, 5, they headed for Halifax (Canada) through RAF Lossiemouth, Kevlavik (Iceland), Narsarsuaq (Greenland) and Goose Bay (Canada). After a little break, flying resumed at 2.00 PM with the Spitfire 'Scramble', and the tradtitional tailchase and flypasts. 12 Spitfires thundering down the runway in an amazing sound. A real delight to our eyes and ears.
As the Spitfires rejoined to land, 5 'Movie Stars' - HA-1112s Buchón, from the motion picture Battle of Britain, graced the skies. The largest such gathering since 1968 (the making of the film).
Bombers and their escorts played also an active role during the conflict. Sally B, the only flying B-17G 'Flying Fortress' in Europe escorted by 2 P-51D Mustangs, payed tribute to alle these men and women.
Followed by a beautiful ballet of the Classic Formation with a C-47 and 3 Beech 18's.
Up next we had the Curtiss Aircraft Quartet. A P-40C, a P-40E, a Hawk 75 and a P-36. What a sight !
Tribute was also payed to the 'few' by 'The Battle of Britain' flight, comprising the Blenheim Mk I, the newly restored Lysander IIIA and three Spitfire Mk I. As this year we also celebrate the 75th anniversary of D-Day (the landing on the beaches of Normandy), the D-Day Flying Legends Tribute took to the skies with three C-47 and two L4 Cubs. But not only the Air Force played a vital role in the conflict, let us not forget the Navy either. The Navy Tribute saw the Bearcat, the Corsair, the Sea Fury, the Catalina and the Wildcat remembering their part.
Flying Legends has seen some fantastic warbird formation displays over the years and the Ultimate Fighters followed in their footsteps, or better, in their contrails, flying a quartet of iconic fighters and making their debut at the 2019 edition.
Led by Jon Gowdy in the P-47D Thunderbolt, Dave Puleston as n° 2 in the Spitfire LF VC, Richard Grace in the HA-1112-M1L Buchón as n° 3 position and Andy Durston with the TF-51D Mustang in the slot position.

As Andy Durston put it :
'Clearly, the aircraft flown by the Utlimate Fighters are the stars of our dynamic display. Performing formation aerobatics in them can be quite challenging, as their weights, drag profiles and powerplants are vastly different. Throughout the various sections of the manoeuvres flown in our display, each aircraft has points where it is working hard to keep up, whilst the other fighters are throttled right back on the power. The Buchón and the Spitfire are pretty closely matched in terms of performance, while the Thunderbolt and Mustang are not to far apart either. As pairs however, they are quite different, and this has been taken into account when divising the routine being performed at the Flying Legends this weekend.'
During their display, they split up, and the Spitfire and Buchón took up the challenge... with the latter being 'shot down'...

A tremendous restoration took place by the Aircraft Manufactoring Co - Historic Aircraft Collection - to bring back to flying condition a De Haviland DH9, two seater day time bomber. The purchase alone took three years to conclude and a further 17 years to complete the restorations. Powered by a 230 hp Siddeley Puma engine, DH9 - E8894 took to the skies for its post-restoration maiden flight at Duxford on 13 May 2019.
First time founded in 1984, the AeroSuperbatics Wingwalkers are regular participants at Duxford. Formerly known as the Cadbury's Crunchie Flying Circus, the Utterly Butterly Barnstormers, Team Guinot or more recently the Breitling Wingwalkers, these wingwalkers perform acrobatics strapped on top of the wing of 1940's Boeing Stearman biplanes. Always a crowd pleaser…
To conclude these days, and before the 'Balbo and Joker' grand finale, we could enjoy the nice C-47A Solo D-Day.
The last display of the day, was the awaited 'Balbo', preceded by the 'Joker'. This years Joker were a Hawker Sea Fury Mk II and a F8F-2P Bearcat.
The Balbo, sending 24 airplanes skywards, was the conlusion of a a once again, wonderful and emotional event. The sight and the sound… shivers down the spine…

The SBAP-team always enjoyed its stay at Duxford and the 2020 edition is already scheduled. We wish to thank heartily the organizers for gathering such intense displays, the participants for keeping our memories alive and remembering all the men and women of which all gave some and some gave all. Lest not forget…
But also the members of the IWM media-team for granting us access to the premises and their support during our stay. See you all back next season !

Buchóns parade...

As written above, five Hispano HA.1112 Buchóns graced the skies overhead Duxford at the Flying Legends 2019. The biggest such gathering since 1968 during the making of the film 'Battle of Britain'.
All these aircraft aircraft are from a batch of 27, purchased by Spitfire Productions from the Spanish Air Force for use in the movie 'Battle of Britain' filmed in 1968. Afterwards, all the airworthy aircraft (together with 4 airframes that had been used for spare parts and masters for fiberglass replicas) where acquired by Wilson 'Connie' Edwards' in payment for his flying during the filming and the majority stored disassembled on his ranch in Big Springs, Texas, U.S.A.
A HA.1112 Buchón is a licensed built Bf109 G by Spanish manufacturer Hispano and is powered by a Rolls Royce Merlin, instead of the DB605 of the Bf109. The marriage of a former German airframe and a British power plant proved to be succesful, giving the aircraft a tremendous reliability whilst maintaining the looks and performances of the Bf109.

1) Hispano HA.1112-M1L Buchón, C/N 145, 'White 9' (G-AWHH) was manufactured in 1958 and is powered by a Rolls Royce Merlin 500/45.
It is painted in the colours of Unteroffizier Edmund Rossmann, a Luftwaffe ace credited with 93 victories through 640 missions. Rossmann is also mentioned as have been the mentor of Erich Hartmann, one of the most succesful pilots of WWII. The aircraft came back to the U.K. in 2017.

2) Hispano HA.1112-M4L Buchón, C/N 40/2, 'Red 11' (G-AWHC) was manufactured in 1954 and is the only two seat survivor of its kind. It is painted in the colours of JG 26 - Lille 1940 (Battle of Britain movie). During the filming, this aircraft was flown by Luftwaffe ace Adolf Galland.

3) Hispano HA.1112-M1L Buchón, C/N 187, 'Yellow 7' (G-AWHM), manufactured in 1958 and powered by a Rolls Royce Merlin 500/45. It is also painted in the colours of JG 26 - Lille 1940 (Battle of Britain movie). The aircraft came back to the U.K. in late 2015.

4) Hispano HA.1112-M1L, C/N 172, 'Yellow 10' (G-AWHK) was built in 1959 and also powered by a Rolls Royce Merlin 500/45. The aircraft came back to the U.K. in 2006.

5) Hispano HA.1112-M1L Buchón, C/N 220, 'White 5' (G-AWHR), was manufactured in 1957 and is powered by a Rolls Royce Merlin 500/45. This is the last 'BF109' flown by Luftwaffe ace Adolf Galland, adviser during the filming of the movie 'Battle of Britain'. It arrived back in the U.K. in 2017 and made his first post-restoration flight on 01 July 2019.
