The KLU (Koninklijke Luchtmacht - Royal Netherlands Air Force) days,
or by all means, the great international airshow of the Netherlands Air Force,
was awaited for more than 3 years, the previous one dating from 2016.

The Netherlands Air Force being in full swing with the integration of the Lockheed-Martin F-35A Lightning II (which was already presented in 2016), the authorities decided not to organize the event in 2018. So, with some eagerness, the aficionados looked forward to the 2019 edition, as our neighbours are really in to presenting surprises and organize their famous "Power Demo". The basic principle of our Dutch neighbours is to organize this kind of event on Friday and Saturday, Sunday being kept to rest and for the family.
What can we retain from this year's event ?
Quite a lot... starting with the "highlights" of the static display, which for most of them arrived on the Ducth airbase on Thursday. Giving honor when honor is due, the presence of the F-35A, from the KLU as well as one form the Aeronautica Militare Italiana, this aircraft which we like or not, arouses curiosity and everyone wants to see the "beast" from up close.
Next, the Hellenic Air Force having dispatched a pair of Phantoms, of which one was superbly decorated. The Phantom being in its last years of operational service, it still draws a lot of attention.
Another highlight of the static exhibition, were the two Belgian Air Force F-16AM, especially decorated to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the landing in Normandy. One has to admit that the Belgian Air Force played it strong in decorating two F-16AM and one C-130H for this occasion, being the only European Air Force, having marked this major historical event this way. Apart from two C-130J and 3 F-15C or E from the USAFE.
Also noteworthy was the presence of an Airbus 330 MRTT in primary colors, which soon will be part of the European fleet. Further on, a little bit of nostalgia with a F-16 decorated like the General Dynamics prototype in 1975 and a superbly restored TF-104G in the Royal Netherlands Air Force colours.

In short, the static display offered such a variety of exhibitions, that everyone could find his pace. Moreover, one shelter provided a base for a F-104G Starfighter being restored with the final avowal to try to get airworthy again. A splendid idea and we wish all the best to this association which took on this ambitious project.
On the flying side, quite a lot of classics of which one never get bored. Like the Patrouille de France, the Red Arrows, the Patrouille Suisse and without forgetting our own more humble "Red Devils" with, as usually, the solo n°. 4 in great shape.
Also for the pleasure of the ears and eyes, the demonstrations of the Draken and Viggen, straight from Sweden and not often seen in our countries. Other solo displays propped up the day of which the Belgian and Danish F-16, the Typhoon, M-346 Master and Spartan flown in from Italy and much more of this.
But one of the true highlights of the airshows of the Koninklijke Luchtmacht, stays the "Power Demo" and this year's edition was eagerly awaited to finally see the new metal bird in action, the F-35A Lightning II.
Sadly, of the two aircraft from the USA, one was put out of order due to technical problems, so only F-008 flew, but made just one pass during the demonstration. A little bit disappointing, but the good old F-16AM and BM ensured the power demo, showing that this 40 years old fighter is still going strong. Followed by the drops and tactical landings of a C-130H, the intervention of airborne troops with Cougar and Chinook, etc...
A show as we like them and this one was concluded by a formation fly-by of the fighters dispensing a lot of flares, to the biggest effect.
Ultimate flight, a superb formation with the new Spitfire Mk IX TB885 in 322Sqn colour scheme, acquired by our Dutch neighbours, together with the F-35A Lightning II and F-16AM Fighting Falcon (J-642) wearing a superb design remembering the 40 years active service of this fighter within the Netherlands Air Force.
And the rather timid display of an USAF C-17 or the nice Hawker Hunter only flown to show the speed capabilities of the aircraft and not showing off the ever elegant lines of this fighter of the 60's with some appreciated "English passes".
In conclusion, after three years of waiting, the Royal Netherlands Air Force provided a magnificent airshow and we can only hope that the next one will be held in two years, like it was before...
The SBAP-team wishes to thanks warmly the organizers and all the personnel of the KLU for their welcome and facilities granted during our stay.
