Once again, the dynamic team of the Shuttleworth Collection inaugurated the airshow season 2019 with its "Season Premiere". It was again a delight to return to the legendary airfield of Old Warden, which for a good number of years has been offering quality airshows.

Each edition has its own thread and this year, the organizers proposed to remember the dark pages of the contemporary history, namely, the Vietnam War, which in fact started with the French involvement in this conflict and subsequently involved the American Forces in a war that over time became bogged down and saw, in the end, the American debacle. Everyone remembering the terrible images of last-ditch evacuations in Saigon.

To highlight this page of history, the organizers had gathered various flying machines ranging from Piper Grasshopper to the Bell Iroquois through the Cessna Bird Dog, Bell 47, Douglas C-47 Skytrain and PBY Catalina.
Indeed, Catalina and Cessna Bird Dog recalled the period of the Indochinese war, while the others had signed some page of the Vietnam conflict. Who does not remember the venerable Dakota, who had already made the glorious hours of the landing in June 1944, turned into fire-eater as the AC-47 Gunship.

In addition to the five different presentations dedicated to this far-flung conflict, which was the first to be mediatized, the organizers also proposed other equally interesting demonstrations, once again highlighting some incredible aircrafts of the collection and highlighting the necessary work to maintain this heritage in flying conditions, as only our neighbours across the Channel know how to do.

So, the Spitfire and Hurricanes alternated with the Sopwith Camel and other Avro 504K, to the delight of the numerous.

Shuttleworth has become an aeronautical must, where we can go back in time, like the famous machine (the 'time-travel' machine) which everyone dreams of. What would I give to go back to the beautiful aeronautical past era, immortalize all "Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines", but with today's camera equipment ... well, the Shuttleworth Collection is able to offer this incredible adventure.
It's just amazing to see the aces of the first war, then to vibrate to the exploits of great raids pilots, followed by a step into the Second World War and end up in Southeast Asia and watch the pilots and machines involved. Most of them remained anonymous, but surely have experienced one of the most horrible and useless conflicts (in fine the question is: is a war useful?).

Well, that's Shuttleworth, offering hours of aeronautical fun without forgetting what the history of these planes and their pilots was.

This was the first airshow of the 2019 season and it was once again a great success, even if the weather gods somehow shunned our talented organizers.

Many thanks for the involvement and the splendid airshow to all the members of the Shuttleworth Collection team. I'm pretty sure your 2019 season will be great!
