"INIOCHOS" is an annual two-week medium scale exercise organized by the Hellenic Air Force Air Tactics Center at Andravida Air Base, in Northwestern Peloponnese, Greece. The duration of the exercise is 15 calendar days (forces deployment from 1 to 12 April), and the scenario adopts a single base concept (execution of operations from a single Air Base), with the participation of all branches of the Armed Forces.

In order to achieve the objectives of the Exercise, the Hellenic Fighter Weapons School oversees the missions from scenario planning to debriefing and makes certain that they cover the full spectrum of missions currently performed by the HAF such as:
- Air operations versus Integrated Air Defense System (IADS)
- Offensive Counter Air / Airfield Attack
- Air Interdiction / Special Targets (bridges, power stations, vehicles, etc.)
- Anti-Surface Warfare
- Slow Mover Protection (SLOMO)
- Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR)
- Dynamic Targeting (DT)
- Strike Coordination and Reconnaissance (SCAR)
- Close -Air Support (CAS)
- Time Sensitive Targets (TST)
- High Value Airborne Asset (HVAA) Protect/Attack

As in 2018, the 2019 edition saw the participation of several nations (Greece, Israel, Italy, UAE (United Arab Emirates) and the U.S.A.) with 3rd, 4th and, for the first time ever, 5th generation combat aircraft. The exercice also involved multiple Hellenic Army and Navy assets.

Among the attendees, six Mirage 2000-9EAD/DAD belonging to the 86 Sqn, UAEAF, based in Al Safran AB; seven F-16C block 30 "Barak" from 117 "First Jet" Sqn and six F-16D block 30 "Barak" from 109 "Valley" Sqn, Israeli AF, both based in Ramat David; six Tornado (three IDS-MLU from 154 Sqn and three ECR from 155 Sqn) from 6 Stormo, Italian Air Force, based in Ghedi; six F-35A from 13 Sqn, Italian Air Force, based in Amendola; twelve F-16C block 50 from 480 Sqn, 52FW, USAFE, based in Spangdahlem, Germany; as well as more than thirty F-16C/D belonging to various squadrons of the HAF, six locally based F-4E AUP from 338 Sqn, six Mirage 2000EG/BG/-5EG/-5BG from 331 and 332 Sqn and a single EMB-145H AEW&C from 380 Sqn. HAF 335 and 336 Sqn operated from their home base at nearby Araxos.

The participation of the "stealthy" F-35A in Iniochos is a welcome "first" as the aircraft only reached IOC (Initial Operational Capability) in november 2018.
The state of the art onboard sensors and the low observability of the aircraft (reduced ability to be detected by hostile RADAR), are distinctive elements that allow to exponentially increase its operational effectiveness, guaranteeing not only greater levels of survival in hostile territories, but also a much better situational awareness.
The role of the F-35 is to "open the door" by eliminating key parts of integrated air defense systems using precision-guided munitions to allow less stealthy aircraft with much higher payloads to enter the battlefield and accomplish their mission with a much reduced anti-aircraft threat.
The combination of stealth, advanced sensors, data fusion and sophisticated countermeasures make the F-35 a force multiplier and a game changer.
If everything goes according to plan, Italy should take delivery of 131 F-35's, 109 F-35A's for the Air Force to replace the ageing Tornado and AMX and 22 F-35B's for the Navy to replace the AV-8B+.

Other aircraft took part in the exercise or supported the drills. For instance, one of the most interesting aircraft was a IAF Gulfstream G-V "Nachshon Shavit" airborne SIGINT (Signal Intelligence) aircraft, from 122 "Dakota" Sqn, wearing the serial 679.
Additionally, Egypt, France, Germany, Jordan, Canada, Croatia and Romania also participated with observers.

The "layout" of the exercise is quite standard: two weeks in length (including deployment and re-deployment of the assets), the exercise scenario adopts a Single Base Concept with air operation launched from an MOB (Main Operating Base). It's a so-called Invitex, meaning that the drills is organized and run by the HAF but also attended by invited nation's aircraft as well. In order to make the training as realistic as possible, the participating units are exposed to an intensive battle rhythm with realistic attrition rates and challenging scenarios that include multiple modern threats and real time live injects tailored to produce the fog of war and the friction effect (per Clausewitz) which is expected to dominate the modern battlefield and test both the physical and psychological endurance of the modern fighter.
A total of 863 sorties (day and night) were flown, in the entire Athens FIR.

History of the exercice
"INIOCHOS" exercise was first created in the 80's and was gradually upgraded and established as an annual Hellenic Air Force Small Scale Air Warfare exercise.
The initial aim was to provide advanced training in planning and conducting Composite Air Operations (COMAO) in accordance with national Operational Doctrines and Plans. The years that followed, the exercise aims adjusted to the operational needs but the scale and the concept remained the same.
Today's security situation challenges air forces across the entire spectrum of their capabilities. Allied countries rely on airpower to deliver rapid and precise response to complex challenges hence operational training must address this widening of the spectrum, especially in a time of military budget constraints.

In 2013 HAF decided a different approach to operational training adapted to the security situation so as to meet the following challenges:
- Develop interoperability and standardization between HAF units and allied nations air forces.
- Promote Jointness, especially in Air-Land and Air-Sea integration of tactics, techniques and procedures.
- Develop integration of Legacy and Modern assets in the modern battlefield.
- Prepare air crews for the future battlefield, to fight in a contested environment.

In 2014 a new concept was implemented with a medium scale INVITEX type single base concept exercise.
The single base concept brings together hundreds of participants in face to face planning, briefing and debriefing thus maximizing training benefits and promoting cooperation and exchange of ideas on tactics between participants with different experience.
The exercise is characterized by an intense battle rhythm designed to test all aspects of operational capability, to evaluate the support of a high tempo of operations and maximizing the operational use of limited air assets.
Iniochos also leverages the exceptional flying environment of Greece, which displays large volume of airspace and a variety of terrain to present four distinct theaters of operations.
The exercise scenario begins with a crisis situation that escalates to a full war giving the opportunity to the participants to be trained in full scale day and night operations.
