İ sbap 2018

The reports on Greek military bases, done by our contributor Philippe, gave me taste to take the plane and fly over to the Hellenic Republic to attend the Athens Flying Week 2018. Every year this week comprises the Greek national airshow, held on the Tanagra airbase, den of the 331 and 332 Mira Mirage 2000. This airbase is located some 100 kilometers to the North-east of Athens.
Once on the site, I can only highlight the more than perfect organization, with the Organizers attending every need, be they visitors, photographers or other members of the international press.
On Friday, only a grandstand was available to immortalize the arrivals and the rehearsals of the displays. The grandstand was ideally placed mid-runway, offering a stunning view on the taxiway and, top of the bill, with a superb sun, as only Greece can offer you, well behind the photographers back all along this first day.
The weekend was dedicated to the airshow as such, and once again, I have to emphasize on the glitch free organization. Friday, after a little chat with the military organizers, yours truly was given access to the base on Saturday morning, two hours before the official opening to immortalize the static display without any visitor wandering everywhere, nor any fences around the aircraft. Some of which were quite interesting and rarely seen in Western Europe.
My main mission was to discover and picture the Greek inventory, in particular the helicopters which do not travel abroad.
I must admit I was smitten being face to face with the AH-64 Apache and CH-467 Chinook of the Hellenic Air Force or the S-70 Aegan Hawk from the Hellenic Navy.
But the Hellenic Army was also well represented with the two especially painted UH-1H Huey.

The foreign participation was a little bit limited, due to the restricted space within the aircraft 'parking lot', but was somehow quite interesting, be it by the presence of two US Marines MV-22, deployed in Sicily at the end of September, an Italian Air Force T-346 Master or a French Air Force Alpha Jet 1E from Cazaux.
Also noteworthy were some former Hellenic Air Force preserved aircraft, a Canadair CL-13 (F-86E) Sabre 2, a Mirage F-1CG, a TF-104G Starfighter or a RF-4E Phantom II.
On the displays side, apart from the aircraft and helicopters with the Greek blue and white roundels, the Organizers had managed to have two international renowned teams on display. The Swiss Air Force PC-7 Team, accompanied by the solo F/A-18 and the Polish Air Force Team Orlik. Our colours were also brightly present in the Hellenic skies; through the Belgian Air Force F-16AM "Dark Falcon", flown by "Vador".
Following this exceptional air show, Monday was dedicated to the departures of the participants and two of my fellow team members stayed on the site to catch some "beasts" from the static display in action.
But let's cut the cackle, time to move on to the pictures, but I certainly will go back to Greece in the future, be it at Tanagra or somewhere else. We had a warm welcome, splendid weather and a perfect Organisation; what do we need else.
The SBAP-team wishes to thank heartily the Organizers for their know-how, their more than warmly welcome but, above all, for the granted facilities to the press including the magnificent opportunity on Saturday morning.
It just gives us the envy to go back as to avoid some organizations, where dices are already loaded on forehand, as done so well in our regions...
