"INIOCHOS" exercise was first created in the 80's and was gradually upgraded and established as an annual Hellenic Air Force Small Scale Air Warfare exercise.

The initial aim was to provide advanced training in planning and conducting Composite Air Operations (COMAO) in accordance with national Operational Doctrines and Plans. The years that followed, the exercise aims adjusted to the operational needs but the scale and the concept remained the same.

Today's security situation, challenges air forces across the entire spectrum of their capabilities. Allied countries rely on airpower to deliver rapid and precise response to complex challenges hence operational training must address this widening of the spectrum, especially in a time of military budget constraints.

In 2013 HAF decided a different approach to operational training adapted to the security situation so as to meet the following challenges:
- Develop interoperability and standardization between HAF units and allied Nations Air forces
- Promote Jointness, especially in Air-Land and Air-Sea integration of tactics, techniques and procedures
- Develop integration of Legacy and Modern assets in the modern battlefield
- Prepare air crews for the future battlefield, to fight in a contested environment.

In 2014 a new concept was implemented with a medium scale INVITEX type single base concept exercise.
The single base concept brings together hundreds of participants in face to face planning, briefing and debriefing thus maximizing training benefits and promoting cooperation and exchange of ideas on tactics between participants with different experience.
The exercise is characterized by an intense battle rhythm that is designed to test all aspects of operational capability of supporting a high tempo of operations and maximizing the operational use of limited air assets.
Iniohos also leverages the exceptional flying environment of Greece, which displays large volume of airspace and a variety of terrain to present four distinct theaters of operations.
The exercise scenario begins with a crisis situation that escalates to a full war giving the opportunity to the participants to be trained in full scale day and night operations.

76 fighters A/C have deployed and will fly more than 1000 sorties in 9 operational days. Robust Naval and Army forces provide a full scale threat and target array which is further augmented with the co-execution of Army's live exercise "POLIFIMOS" and Navy's "ASTRAPI".

The participants in INIOCHOS 2018 are :
Hellenic Air Force: F-16C/D Block 30/50/52+/52+ Advanced, F-4E AUP, Mirage 2000EG/-5EG/BG, EMB-145H AEW&C
Cyprus National Guard Air Wing: Agusta Westland AW-139
United States Air Force: Boeing F-15E Strike Eagle
Royal Air Force: Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4
Aeronautica Militare Italiana: Tornado IDS MLU
United Arab Emirates Air Force: Mirage 2000-9
Israeli Air Force: F-16C Block 30

While the participants are exposed to non-stop fighting, information flow affects every aspect of the mission thus creates a realistic and immerse environment where the air crews' tactical flexibility in decision making is challenged.
To ensure the quality, tactical relevance and valid results, the Fighter Weapons School has the oversight of all tactical aspects of the exercise.
The aforementioned characteristics create a unique demanding training environment that only Iniohos exercise can provide.
The area used by Iniohos participating units includes the whole Athens FIR (Flight Information Region), in other words the entire greek airspace, mainlang Greece and her territorial waters.

All air forces alternated between " blue air " and " red air " roles including :
- Air operations versus Integrated Air Defense System (IADS)
- Offensive Counter Air / Airfield Attack / Air Interdiction / Special Targets (bridges, power stations, vehicles, etc.).
- Anti Surface Warfare
- Slow Mover Protection (SLOMO)
- Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR).
- Dynamic Targeting (DT) / Strike Coordination and Reconnaissance (SCAR) / Close Air Support (CAS) / Time Sensitive Targets (TST).
- High Value Airborne Asset (HVAA) Protect/Attack

Iniohos 2018 was divided in four phases :
- Phase 1: Preparation
- Phase 2: Force Deployment: 5-7 March 18
- Phase 3: Execution Phase: 12-23 March 18
- Distinguished Visitors Day: 20 March
- Phase 4 : Hot Wash Up: 23 March 18

Iniohos has now become one of the most competitive INVITEX providing high level training.

SBAP would like to thank the Hellenic Air Force General Staff, the Fighter Weapons School and 117 Combat Wing for the organization of the Iniohos 2018 media day and the facilities granted to our team on site.
