To complete its 2017 aeronautical season, the dynamic team of the Shuttleworth Collection had, as last year, concocted a "Race Day". It was an opportunity to gather on the grounds of Old Warden, together with a considerable number of vintage motorcycles and cars, in addition to the airplanes foreseen for the afternoon.
However, the weather gods were not aligned with the organizers, and the forecasts were not too positive for Sunday, causing fear for a possible cancellation.
The organizers were forced to stop pre-sales through their site on Friday, to limit the number of vehicles on the ground out of fear for the parking spots that could have become too soggy.
In the end, the weather was not as catastrophic, but it was not the Indian summer as we would have hoped.
So let's go back to the events of October 1st , and to the races of the crazy years. The morning was devoted to admiring the prestigious racing cars, that were so lovingly restored.
Some of these vehicles were quite amazing, especially this Morgan, equipped with a Pobjoy radial engine (which also is equipped on the Comper Swift), a rare and quite curious thing in the design of a car. The 1908 Mors that we could admire last year was also present, with the very typical sound of its engine. In addition to the crazy cars, the field was also the scene of a concentration of Porsche 911's, one even more beautiful than the other.
This morning was also the opportunity to walk through the workshops, and see the progress of the Spitfire Mk Vb (AR501) of the collection which, hopefully, will soon take to the skies, much to our greatest pleasure. Who knows, next season may be the one for its return.
But Old Warden's land also means beautiful nature, with its horticultural college, and the famous "Swiss Garden". This time, the urge was too strong not to go for a walk, and admire bucolic places, in an almost religious silence, while not far from there, the engines continued to roar. After this interlude away from all that mechanical rage, it was time to admire the vehicles, cars as well as motorcycles in action on the runway of the airfield, a true jump back in time, back to the glory of tracks such as Brooklands and Goodwood.
Then came the airshow, the last one of the season. This one was modified due to the weather, not allowing flying aircraft that were too light.
Despite this shortened show, the presentations were interesting, especially the simulation of "Red Bull Air Race" by Mark Jefferies, and the race of four Pitts.
To conclude, we can highlight that the team of the Shuttleworth Collection has offered a great 2017 season to aviation enthusiasts, but also to those who love the collectible vehicles, the vintage atmosphere, and the friendliness that characterizes Her Majesties subjects.
May this page and these few lines be our way of thanking all people in the dynamic team of the Shuttleworth Collection, the pilots, Mechanics, Volunteers, cooks and all the helping hands, for this fabulous 2017 season.
This would not be complete without a special thanks to Mrs. Ciara Harper, Media Manager, for her support during our various visits and her limitless kindness.
The last words will be: It is with impatience that we are awaiting the 2018 season, so we can return to this charming place and ... vintage planes!
