On 13 and 14 August, the Diest Aero Club organized its 33rd Oldtimer Fly-In on Shaffen-Diest airfield.
The aim of this event is not to present an airshow but to gather from European countries all kind of aircraft from nicely restored old aircraft to nowadays modern flying machines. It is also an opportunity for spectators, owners and pilots to discover Schaffen airfield and its history.
Indeed, this year was the celebration of 100 years of this platform which was created and built by the German army in 1916. A special exhibition showed the history of the airfield. Big parts of the initial infrastructure are still existing despite 2 World Wars, 2 heavy bombing raids, several strafings and 8 different users from 5 countries. It started as an airfield, became a dropping zone, and came back to an airfield with a dropping zone ; now, it is not only a military domain but also a recreation zone for air sports (general aviation, ULM, paradropping, gliders, RC modell flying etc...). Schaffen airfield is in fact the oldest airfield in Belgium having been continuously in use.
Besides the aircraft a Drive-In gathered a lot of cars, caravans, motorcycles, bikes, and so on.
To be noticed this year the presence of a guest star, the Red Devils who were not authorized to give more than flyby's because of the nature of this event. The show took place more on the ground than in the air. However some mix formations occupied the beautiful sky of Schaffen occasionally during both days.
