The SBAP team awaits always eagerly the mid-August period to cross the Channel once again to cover what has become the must in "Seafront" airshows: Airbourne 2016. Reporting on this event really equals some vacation leave because of the heartily and warm welcome and the relaxing and summery mood.
After the inevitable "full English breakfast" to start the day with, the mornings were dedicated to wander through the various sale-booths, have a chat with the teams and immortalize those unforgettable moments.
During this summer feast, children are most pampered (even the bigger children of our team) with numerous activities and other sideshows. These little ones had the opportunity to hold the stick in a Gazelle, to be, just for a moment, the pilot of a good old Sea Harrier or to become a member of the Red Arrows in a simulator.
The Cadets of the RAF are always present and it is really heartwarming to see these uniformed youngsters learning the discipline and valours of the British people. The organizers also deserve a particular mention for the safety level as the seaside lane was blocked by big concrete blocs and heavy duty barriers to avoid sceneries as we had in Nice in July. Well done!
Every afternoon took us to the heart of the subject: the airshow, and this year again the program was more than interesting and versatile... Let's go!
Taking a leap back in time, some 100 years, with the "Great War Display Team" and their "string bags" which let us relive the aerial combats between the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the German belligerents. A nice show, even knowing those planes are replicas. The "Battle of Britain Memorial Flight "(BBMF) also attended the show, with the long awaited return of the Avro Lancaster which was partially damaged some months ago due to an engine fire.

The spectators were gratified with some nice "warbirds" like the Bristol Blenheim Mk I, flown with mastery by John Romain, the North American B-25J "Mitchell" from our Dutch neighbours, the Boeing B-17G "Sally B" flown in from Duxford, the two-seat Spitfire Mk Tr IX (PV202) and finally the North American P-51D "Mustang" flown by Peter Teichmann and having been repainted in June in the colours of the 99th American Fighter Group, better known as the "Red Tails" or the "Tuskagee Men". A renowned squadron made up of Afro-American pilots about who a great deal was written during the Second World War.
The program included other ancient but more recent airplanes such as the Belgian Rockwell OV-10B "Bronco", the Mig 15 UTI and the Vampire duo from the "Norwegian Air Force Historical Squadron" and another highly coloured duo with a Jet Provost T.3 and T.5 and the much awaited star of the event, the De Havilland DH.110 "Sea Vixen" FAW.2 from the Royal Navy Historical Flight. Only planned on Sunday as the show finale, the pilot, sadly, was hampered by a technical problem. After a first fly-by "all down" he could not raise the flaps and had to keep the speed down (due to the downward position of the flaps), he flew directly to Yeovilton were he landed without further problems.
Airbourne 2016 was the sea, the sun, blue skies and the presence of aerobatic teams. This year, the "Blades", the "Team Raven", the "Breitling Wingwalkers" and the "Fireflies" gave the best of their selves to ensure a high quality show and offer magnificent aerial ballets writing the skies of the seaside resort with some beautiful Smokey arabesques.
Airbourne is also the home to the Royal Air Force, however limited this year to the Puma on Thursday and Friday, the Typhoon FGR.4 solo-display and the Red Arrows. We regret the SAR helicopters from the RAF which gave a cachet with their displays with boats on a deep blue sea background image. Also the British Army was present with the "Tigers Parachute Display team", all masters under their chutes, ensuring a really original show.
This was Airbourne 2016 in a nutshell, but the Sunday continued to an apotheosis with another "dusk" display of the "Fireflies", concerts such as the show of Chloe Paige and the "Hot Detroit" group with some nice "Motown" songs. Really nice songs and shows concluded by the traditional firework display. This is Eastbourne in mid-August!

For the 5th year, SBAP reports on this inescapable event and this is always with a non-dissimulated joy thanks to the organizers, the Eastbourne Borough Council and the whole media team which heartily welcomes us every time. Big thanks to Annie, always there to help, Tracey and here eternal smile, Matt, the sympathetic and humorous member, Jenny and the "stewards" for their welcome, help and granted facilities.
It will always be with a renewed pleasure that we will cross the Channel to see you and support your Seafront Airshow. We will be certainly back for the 2017 edition :-)
