From 1913 to 2013... (KLU archives - Serge Van Heertum)

Like every year the Netherlands Air Force had planned its international airshow in May. This year the main “red line” was the 100 years of military aviation in the Netherlands. Effectively, like many European air forces, the military aviation history started shortly before the First World War.
Dutch air power started in July 1913 with the founding of the Army Aviation Group (Luchtvaartafdeeling or LVA) at Soesterberg airfield. At the creation, the Army Aviation Group operated one aircraft, the Brik, which was supplemented with three French Farman aircraft a few months later. These aircraft were soon outdated and the Dutch government ordered several fighter-reconnaissance Nieuport and Caudron aircraft to replace them. The Netherlands maintained a neutral position during World War I and the Army Aviation Group did not take part in any action, but was still busy to develop the military aviation capabilities. New airfields were established at Arnhem, Gilze-Rijen air base, Venlo and Vlissingen. After the end of World War I the Dutch government cut the defense budget and the Army Aviation Group was almost disbanded. In May 1940, Germany invaded the Netherlands. Within five days the Dutch Army Aviation Brigade was taken out by the German Luftwaffe. In spite of their numerical inferiority, the Dutch armed forces did enjoy success against the Luftwaffe, having 350 Luftwaffe aircraft destroyed, although many of these were lost to anti-aircraft brigade. The cost was high, 95% of the Dutch pilots were lost. In recognition of their actions Queen Wilhelmina granted the highest Dutch military decoration (the Militaire Willemsorde) to the Army Aviation Brigade collectively. In July 1944, the Directorate of Netherlands Airpower was established in London and in 1947, the first Chief of Dutch Air Force Staff was appointed.
On March 27th, 1953 the Royal Netherlands Air Force officially became an independent part of the Dutch armed forces, rather than part of the Army. During the cold war era Dutch Air Force units played an important part in the West European defense against the opposing Warsaw Pact forces. The Dutch Air Force manned five fully operational self-supporting Missile Groups in West Germany (1 and 2 MslGrp were equipped with NIKE batteries, while 3,4 and 5 MslGrp were equipped with Hawk). Dutch fighters and other weapon systems also took a full part in NATO alert, standby duties and exercises through the years. In the 1990’s the RNLAF took part in many NATO operations like ex-Yugoslavia and Afghanistan. Later on, the RNLAF was hit hard by the Dutch defense cuts after the 2008 financial crisis. The last disbanded squadron was the 311 in September 2012, leaving four operational squadrons of F-16’s.
This is a little and condensed history of the Dutch military aviation, time now to have a look at this great airshow held on May 14th and 15th with real interesting participant. Some of them to show type of aircraft used by the Netherlands Air Force, some other coming from former East bloc to show the evolution of the international  relationship with the former “enemy”. Last but not least
four aerobatic teams internationally renamed. A height hour’s spectacle for the pleasure of eyes and ears like our Netherlands neighbors can organize. We would like to thanks the Koninklijke Luchtmacht Press Office for the accreditation and facilities during this wonderful airshow. Happy Birthday KLU!
