Cerny La Ferte-Alais has become an essential aeronautical appointment during the weekend of Pentecost, for the last four decennia. 2013 has not failed the tradition and the 41st meeting was held with a specific theme, like it is every year. The theme of this year was the centenary of the Mediterranean Sea crossing performed by Roland Garros with his Morane type "H" aircraft. Sadly, this year, the rain invited itself to the party, and Saturday was particularly wet, forcing the cancellation of some demonstrations and scaring away a lot of the public. Sunday was grey as well, but a lot less rainy, allowing to complete the entire program. Arriving early in the morning, our team visited the static display, the various exhibitions, had the possibility to make aeronautical shopping in the numerous stands available. Over the years, the meeting of the Association Jean Baptiste Salis (AJBS) also became the appointment for aviation comic book lovers, who had the opportunity to acquire the latest releases and last but not least, obtaining a signature in the last acquired album. We would also like to emphasize that the poster of the meeting "le temps des hélices" has been realized by Romain Hugault for the last five years, known for his aircraft drawings, and moreover, for his sympathy towards the fans.

In the morning, many “first flights” could be done, ensuring the visitors a waltz of takeoffs and landings. After noon, at 12:30 sharp, the meeting started and for no less than seven hours, it was a real feast for the eyes and ears. The program was a mixture of “string bags”, warbirds and the most modern jets. It won't be necessary to make an exhaustive and boring list of the different presentations, the pictures speak for themselves ... To conclude, the organizers once again did all they could to ensure a wonderful airshow that we can qualify as “a must in continental Europe”. If you love aviation and you have not made the trip to La Ferte Alais yet, make sure the appointment for 2014 is in your calendar, you will not regret it!
SBAP would like to thanks the organizers for the wonderfull airshow and particularly Mrs C. Derenne and Mrs C. Taillandier for her support and press accreditation.

Roland Garros: 100 year after the first cross of the Mediterranean Sea

Roland Adrien Georges Garros was born on October 6th, 1888 at Saint-Denis de La Réunion. His rise to fame was first and foremost due to his sporting achievements in aviation. His notoriety will be rise by the first aerial crossing of the Mediterranean sea, performed on September 23rd, 1913. The flight plan was starting from Saint-Raphaël  (Var department) to Bizerte (North of Tunisia). The Morane type H aircraft took off at 5 h 47, weighed down with 200 liters of fuel and 60 liters of castor oil. He did his navigation solely with a compass, and during this historical trip the plane suffered two engine failures, one above Corsica and the other over Sardinia. When he landed at Bizerte in Tunisia after a flight of 7 hours and 53 minutes, the remaining fuel was only 5 liters!
In Marseille, and afterwards in Paris, the aviator was welcomed in triumph. We must say, after this incredible feat, the conqueror of the Mediterranean became the darling of France and the Paris “jet set” of 1913.
Press claim  that the first airline would occur soon, but that did not happen until after the war. The 39 km long "Channel crossing" took place only four years earlier. Moreover, it took only six years after that (and a war) for the first air crossing of the Atlantic, on June 15, 1919, by the British, Alcock and Brown.
Shortly after his feat, the First World War began and Roland Garros was engaged in the conflict. Lieutenant in the French air force, Garros developed the first firing system through the propeller. Sadly an aircraft equipped with this invention was captured by the Germans. Roland Garros was shot down during aerial combat above Saint-Morel (Ardennes) on October 5th, 1918; the day before his 30st anniversary!
