Airshow season 2012 is over and this is also the case for the Belgian Air Force “Red Devils”. To conclude the successful season, the Belgian ambassadors held a friends and family day at Beauvechain on October 24th. The afternoon began with the traditional briefing. After a little presentation of the team to the guests, “Papy” the leader started the display briefing. During this one we could fell the wingmen concentration growing. As soon as the briefing was over the guest went to the C3 hangar platform and our “Reds” to the C7 were the planes were waiting the drivers. In awaiting this last display, some SF.260 went back from training missions and the Agusta A109 display team did also his last display but for the guest of the 17th squadron located at other side of the base. It was also the real last demonstration of Igor Graeghs who will now return to the operations. By this article we thank “Igor” for his performances and wish him all the best for the future. Coming from the left, we could hear the characteristic sound of the four red planes heading in our direction. The winter sun gave different lighting on the planes during taxi…a pleasure for the photographers. After the holding at 04L, the leader got the take-off clearance and quickly the four Lycoming engines did hear the roar. After formation take off the team took some altitude and began their show “well oiled” now and that with a blue sky background, sadly with a little bit altitude mist. Set like a Swiss clock, the show was again a feast chaining of clover leaf, looping, and barrel roll. After the first split the team continued the presentation and the different figures, while "Stef" number 4 provided solo figures avoiding downtime and making the show very dynamic. A last join up, coming back in front of the guest area and finally the front split…great, once again great! After landing, the taxi passing at the guest area and back to the parking. During their hot debriefing, the invited people went back to the squadron building. After a drink, time was for a speech. “Papy” the leader did an overview of the 2012 season that can be qualified as a successful one for the team more and more appreciate in the European Airshow world. Afterward “Papy” underlined the presence of Guy Moinet, former “Red Devils” technician who was seriously injured in an ULM crash. This was for Guy his first appearance since this sad day. This show that a “Reds” member is never forgot and that self a Devil have a great hart. After that it was time for thanks along with some gifts. Comopsair IPR authorities, Competency Center commander and 5th Squadron Commander Officer were honored by the team for their support along the season.

Also a former “Red Devils” pilot was set forward, Cpt Olivier “Mel” Gilson, as member of the 2011 team and last but not least the godfather of the team Jacques “Red” Dewaelheyns also a former “Red Devils” but in the mid 1960’s. As conclusion, “Papy” underlined that our national team will be still present in the 2013 international airshow world. This afternoon was an happy conclusion of the season, this was not the last event for the “Reds” but this is another story you will see at another SBAP page…SBAP team would like to thanks the “Reds” for the invitation and this page is our way to thanks them for all the pleasure they gave us during the season 2012, their usual kindness and more simply their sincere friendship.
