Saint Quentin-Roupy airfield (Google earth)

Saint Quentin-Roupy airfield (LFOW) is located at around 10 kilometers of Saint Quentin city in north of France. This is a little airfield  with two grass runways. The 04/22 is 670 meters long and the 14/32 is 620 meters long. This airfield is the home base of the “Aeroclub de l’Aisne”.
This Flying club was founded on December 8th, 1927 by Mister Constant Plessis and his first president was Miss Suzanne de la Meurthe until 1937. Since the beginning the airfield was growing with the construction of the first hangar and an order for a first plane, a Caudron 127 registered F-AIAO thanks to a donation made by the president. In 1928 a second plane is bought. In the early days, the airfield had no runway, it was simply a square airfield and the pilots took off or landed in function of the wind. The Flying Club is declared of public utility in March 1939 but will stop all activities during the Second World War when the German forces had requisitioned the aircraft and occupied the installations. The activities started back in December 1944 and were the occasion to open new sections. A glider section and also an aero-modelers section were created. Thanks to the war damage financial incentive a new Stampe aircraft is acquired in September 1947. This year a parachutist section is inaugurated and the sport aviation became really popular in this region.
Since 1973 the activities are limited to engine flying, the other sections integrated the national federations of each specialty. To end this little historic overview, it is interesting to note that this little airfield saw along the years many historic figures of the French aviation like:

Mr. Joseph Frantz: The first man to shoot down a German aircraft during the WWI with a simple gun
Mrs. Maryse Bastié: Height time aerobatic champion and owner of the North Atlantic crossing record.
Mr. Constant Plessis: Five victories during the WWI.
Mr. Sadi Lecointe: Aerobatic world champion in 1928.
Mr. Raymond Delmotte: Speed record owner in 1933 with a flight at 433 Km/H.
Mr. Marcel Doret: Aerobatic world champion in 1932.
Mr. Paul Codos & Mr. Maurice Rossi: Longest flight world champion in 1935.
Mrs. Colette Duval: Parchute world champion with a jump at 12.000 meters in Rio de Janeiro
and many others like Mr. Georges Guynemer, Mr. Pierre Weiss or Mr. Michel Detroyat…

September 26th was the date chosen by the Flying Club staff to organize an airshow dedicated to the French-Belgian friendless. In a real convivial atmosphere many demonstration could be admired like Harvard, Bücker, Yak, Trojan and many others historic civilian or military aircraft. Also some amazing presentation of flying models was planned. The Belgian participation was granted by the F-16 solo display “Grat” and our national red planes…the “Red Devils”. Both displays get well received by the public and after the display the public went to the Belgian demo team stand to feel the unique Belgian way of life and took the opportunity to buy some souvenirs. The airshow ended with a demonstration of the “Patrouille de France” and further on with a public music concert. In one word a real pleasant airshow with one leitmotiv….a convivial aviation fair. More than words, the pictures are talking from themselves. By this page we would like to thanks the organizer, Mr. Pascal Cordier big boss of the event, Mrs. Delfine Lessertisseur public and media relations and all the members of the flying club involved in the organization for their kindness and hospitality during this report.
