Payerne airbase was created in 1921 with the construction of a single grass runway and the transfer of the first hangar from Avenche. In 1923 a second hangar is built. In 1935 the base is enlarged and in 1939 the squadron CpAv 15 was installed with 6 Messerschmitt BF-109. During the Second World War all the Swiss bases remained in continuous alert to preserve their neutrality. During this period many aircraft will be captured. For example between April 25th and September 12th, 1944 12 American bombers (12 B-24 and 5 B-17) landed at Payerne after being damaged by the German flak during their missions. Just after the war the first De Havilland DH 100 Mk1 “Vampire” was stationed at Payerne and this event was the starting point for Switzerland entering the jet fighter era. Some years later the old P-51D fleet was replaced by the De Havilland DH 100 Mk 6 “Vampire” In 1954 the DH-112 Mk 1 “Venom” makes its appearance under the Swiss colours. The most popular and modern jet, the Hawker Hunter began his career at Payerne in 1958. 1967 the first Mirage IIIS aircrafts are stationed at Payerne and declared operational. The same year, the Swiss authorities deployed at Payerne the new ground to air missile BL-64 “Bloodhound”. Later on, in 1978, the new Northrop F-5E Tiger II made his appearance at Payerne airbase. In 1993 the new transport helicopter AS332M1 Super Puma was also based at Payerne. The Swiss Air Force opened a new page in his history in 1997 when the first Paryene based
Boeing F/A 18 aircraft was declared operational. Since then and until today Payerne record around 10000 civil aircraft movements and more than 13000 Air Force movements (including 7700 F/A 18 missions).
