Meiringen airbase was declared operational during the Second World War in 1941. Today, this is the only remaining operational base with the famous ‘caverns” built during the cold war era. Those “caverns” are built in the mountains providing a reliable protection for aircraft and crew members against the possible nuclear attack really present during that period. Today the base of Meiringen is responsible for the operational readiness for the air policing in the canton of Bern. The airbase command is also responsible for the readiness of the F-5 fleet all over the Swiss territory. Currently, besides some F-5E based at Meiringen, the most important squadron is the 11 staffel “tiger” and their Boeing F/A 18 fighters stationed there since 2006. Meiringen is also the operational base during the shooting exercises like the one held in last October.
