The 27th edition of the International Schaffen Old Timer
Fly-In took place on
14th and 15th August
2010. As an annual tradition, Diest Aero Club
organised this
event and that since 1979. So during more than 30 years, this event became one
of the most important fly-in at
Europe with an international participation of collector planes from Belgium
naturally, but
also from
France, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, England
and many other countries. This fly-in is a
unique opportunity for old machines (or even
recent ones) owners
and pilots to meet each other
once a year. The International Old Timer Fly-in is not an air show, but a
pleasant meeting of historical airplanes and their pilots. Some pilots are
barely older than their airplanes, while others are young
and passionately about
restoring these planes in their original condition.
Something you cannot
see at the
fly-in is the amount of hours, days, weeks, months
or even years that
these guys
have
spent before the wreck
they found became an airworthy plane. If these airplanes could speak, you
would hear long
stories on how all those old flying machine fans kept on trying to straighten
that wing, looking for the last missing parts, fixing the canopy and so on, just
to get their treasure airborne again. This is not a challenge it's only a
passion, a way of life.
On the first day this year many
participants
landed on EBDT airfield, but less as usual due
to the bad weather prediction.
This was also the case
on Sunday and in the early afternoon
most of the visitors had already left Schaffen.
This fly-in is a must stay
in Belgium and in Europe, so let’s hope that the 2011 edition will be
sunnier and will
attempt the record of 1997 with 449 airplanes on the site !
