Dijon-Darois Airshow : Like a good Bourgogne wine !
Text: Serge Van Heertum - Pictures : Serge Van Heertum, Eddy Devroey & Kurt Vanden Noortgate - SBAP
Darois 2010, the centennial airshow. Indeed, in 1910 the first aviation
manifestation was held in Dijon (military field
la
Madrière). It was in fact a
contest won by a 16 year old boy named Marcel Hanriot His price was – for that
era in the Belle époque- the astronomical amount of 18,500 French
Francs. The boy
managed to fly 21 minutes and 25 seconds and reached an altitude of 290 meters
(around 950 feet). Afterwards it was the city of Beaune itself who organized an
“airshow” the same year. In 1911, the city of Semur held its first airshow...with
two participating planes (both of them crashed), but still it was a success.
In 1923 the “Aeroclub de la Côte d’Or” was created by military pilots and
civilians at Longvic. Dijon-Lonvic airbase developed further and the activity of
military aircraft boomed, so it was decided to create an airfield especially
dedicated to sport aviation in Darois in 1957. The “Aeroclub de la Côte d’Or”
had its own homebase since that year. Over the years, Darois grew and the
airfield is now occupied by aviation companies and various associations.
Five years ago all these companies and associations have
been grouped together under the label InnovAero.

The 2010 edition of the airshow was undoubtedly a success and the airplanes presented came primarily from Darois or from the region (Beaune-Challange, Dijon-Longvic). This was the opportunity to see some beautiful machines, sport aviation aircraft and warbirds as well. Presented in solo display or in team, it was a treat for the public and especially for photographers. It is like a good Bourgogne wine to be savoured and leaves a pleasant aftertaste ... If by any chance you're in Bourgogne, near Dijon at their next meeting, go check it out and discover this aeronautical fair! It is an excellent and friendly place. In other words : An airshow as we like them.
The SBAP team would like to thank the President of the “Aeroclub de la Côte d’Or”, Mister Jean Wiacek for the invitation and all members of this club for the warm welcome on this day. We would also like to thank the press and photographer management team, Virginie, Alexandre "Switch", Adrien and Phill for their help and guidance during this day allowing us to make a very good photoshoot.
